Sixth Sunday of Luke
The Feast of The Great-Martyr, Demetrius, Myrrh-streaming
and The Sixth Sunday of Luke
There are a wide variety of saints from all walks of life. St. Demetrios, was a military commander, not unlike many other Great-martyrs of our Church whose lives were strong witnesses of our Faith. At the very end of the second century, the Emperor Maximian, appointed Demetrios to succeed his father as the Commander of Salonica (which is known today as Thessaloniki). And to the great surprise of Maximian, we learn from the Synaxarion [a book consisting of the record of the lives of the Saints] that St. Demetrios “went against the orders of the emperor by not persecuting and exterminating the Christians of Salonica. Demetrios openly confessed and preached Christ in the city. He unashamedly proclaimed himself to be a Christian, and we are told, denounced the Emperor’s idolatrous pride.” Demetrios, it says, “remained ever aware of the underlying realities of life… considering all the glory of this world as meaning nothing to him. There was nothing he preferred more than to teach and preach the word of God.”
